Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Healthcare Data Engineer.

Summary

NYU Langone Health’s Data Management and Architecture team is responsible for data architecture, data management, data governance solutions and big data solutions using Hadoop and AWS. The healthcare data engineer will be a key member of this team, responsible for data engineering and user support for big data solutions primarily focused on Cloudera Hadoop and AWS. The data engineer must have strong hands-on technical skills in SQL, Unix scripting, data/application interfaces (e.g. REST API), Java and Python, big data experience and some experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The ideal candidate is technically savvy, self-driven, collaborative, intellectually curious, a continuous learner, and thrives in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment.

Job Responsibilities

  •  Analyze data sources for data discovery, data quality and data processing
  • Design, develop and support data engineering and integration applications using various tools and frameworks as required
  • Develop, automate and optimize data pipelines using SQL, Unix and Python scripts, Sqoop, Airflow and other technologies for different types data and data sources such as relational, text/csv files, RESTful interfaces, AWS S3 buckets
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure required for efficient extraction, transformation, loading and extraction of data
  • Develop and debug SQL queries, integrate data from multiple tables using joins, filters and complex sub-queries to optimize reporting
  • Identify and remedy data quality and data processing issues
  • Develop pipelines for real-time/streaming data using technologies such as Kafka
  • Work closely with technology architects and infrastructure teams in new development, production support and issue resolution
  • Work closely with and provide technical support to users at all levels of expertise, including clinical informaticists (physicians and surgeons), researchers, medical trainees, data analysts and data scientists
  • Assist users with SQL queries and connectivity to Hadoop and AWS using analytic tools and languages such as Python, R, SAS, Tableau etc.
  • Learn concepts related to healthcare data and analytics including industry data models (e.g. OMOP), image processing, genomics processing, document search (Solr) etc., and build data engineering solutions in various areas of healthcare
  • Collaborate with US-based and offshore colleagues and consultants
  • Create high-quality technical and user documentation
  • Manage work and report on it using project tools such as Jira
  • Develop expertise and become a subject matter expert in data engineering
  • Assist in other areas such as Informatica master data management and Collibra data governance, as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field
  • Good understanding of relational database concepts, stored procedures, referential integrity etc.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Oracle and MySQL; proficiency in SQL and data integration/transformation from diverse data sources, data orchestration, and ETL development
  • Strong experience with Unix scripting
  • Strong experience with Python with libraries such as Pandas, NymPy etc.
  • Experience with API integration and RESTful interfaces
  • Working knowledge of ODBC and JDBC
  • 3-5 years of experience working as an ETL developer or data engineer
  • At least 2-3 years of working with SQL and relational databases
  • At least 2 years of experience working with big data technologies (Hadoop, HDFS, HIVE, Impala, Spark)
  • At least 1 year of Python
  • Experience with bitbucket, github or similar tool
  • Strong problem-solving and reasoning capabilities
  • Can-do and “forever learning” attitude; strong desire and ability to learn new technologies and techniques and take on responsibilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and the ability to relate and collaborate
  •  Adept at multi-tasking, prioritizing and working in a fast-paced environment

Additional Qualifications

  • Understanding of data visualization; experience with Tableau
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and dev-ops
  • Experience with agile development and tools

Your job responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:

 

         Plan, develop and implement data storage and reporting systems in support of employee benefits programs and play an integral role in strategic planning, assessment of plan financial status and operational efficiency, and evaluation of vendor performance.

 

         Serve as steward of health and welfare benefit program data. Review and monitor quality of data to ensure integrity. Work with carriers, third party administrators, and data warehouse vendor to achieve timely transmission and loading of complete and accurate data. Conduct comparisons between vendor and data warehouse reporting to ensure consistency. Ensure data security, privacy and confidentiality.

 

         Create and conduct routine and ad-hoc reporting from the data warehouse using vendor's analytic tools. Interpret requests for information from Benefits Programs team, UC senior leadership and other constituents and stakeholders, and create data queries providing meaningful results.

 

·         Partner with health analytics vendor and consulting partner to create dashboards and illustrative charts as requested by Health & Welfare Benefits and other stakeholders.
